The Kremlin announced today that the situation in Belarus was under control and that there was no need to send troops to support Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said last week that the Kremlin had set up a reserve police force at Lukashenko’s request, which remained inactive and would be deployed if the situation would get out of control.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peshkov told reporters today that Belarussian security forces and the leadership had the situation under control and that there was no room for provocations during large-scale gatherings. He added that Russia was ready to discuss with Belarus the revision of the constitution, but as he said, there was no such request on their part at the moment.
As reported by the state news agency Belta, according to Lukashenko, “experts”, including judges and the Supreme Court, are currently working on a review of fundamental legislation that will be put to a referendum in Belarus.
