The President of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, issued an invitation to the Patriarch of Jerusalem Mr. Theophilos.
In an announcement by the Press Office of the Ukrainian Presidency, it is noted that, after the initiative of Mr. Theophilos, there took place a telephone conversation between the two men, during which the President of Ukraine wished the Patriarch Theophilos health and success in his patriarchal mission.
From his part, the Patriarch of Jerusalem confirmed that he shall pray for peace and prosperity in Ukraine, as well as for the unity of the Orthodox Ukrainians.
As it is maintained in the announcement of the Ukrainian Presidency, during the conversation it was stressed that it is significant, from a historical point of view, to establish a normal local Orthodox Church in Ukraine, which “shall correspond to the ambitions of the people in Ukraine”.
Furthermore, Petro Poroshenko invited Patriarch Theophilos to make a shepherding visit to Ukraine, “for a common prayer for peace in this country and all over Europe, and to open a dialogue with the local Church of Ukraine”.
Finally, it should be noted that during President Poroshenko’s last visit to Israel, the Patriarch of Jerusalem did not have an official meeting with him, for health reasons.
