By Bishop Gregorios of Mesaoria
The Church today commemorates Venerable Hilarion the Great, as well as Hieromartyr Bishop Socrates of Ankara and Venerables Barnabas and Hilarion.
The two Venerables came from Cappadocia and lived in the 5th century AD. They died venerably in their homeland, having previously benefited its people through teaching, alms, and the gift of healing with which God had honoured them. Their relics appeared on the estuary of the Serahi River, in the Morphos area, and were transferred to their present location by a faithful of the area, who had been informed by the Venerbles themselves, through repeated visions.
We also honour the memory of the new ascetic Venerable Hilarion. He is the third Saint Hilarion to be honoured in Cyprus. Leontios Mahairas calls him “the younger”, and he is the ascetic who lived on the homonymous peak of Pentadactylus.
