Ieronymos to Metropolitans: We should watch the rapid changes worldwide (upd)

Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens and All Greece

LAST UPDATE: 14:24

With the phrase of the late Metropolitan Meliton Hatzis of Chalcedon, “yesterday has passed long ago, we do not even live today’s day, and the day after tomorrow has already caught us up”, with which the hierarch of the Ecumenical Patriarchate had vividly described the rapid developments and changes worldwide in 1968, Archbishop Ieronymos addressed the body of the Hierarchy, recognizing that the Church must keep a close eye on the tone of international developments and discuss current issues.

As Archbishop Ieronymos said in his introduction to the metropolitan body, “New world data, that occure through the ever-increasing use of various technological breakthroughs, are unfortunately leading to new methods of enforcing the strong to the weak and to the oppression of the most precious gift of human freedom.”

Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens stressed that the Holy Synod of the Hierarchy meets “once more amidst various social problems, which suppress the vividness of the lives of our people and create feelings of insecurity.”

The Primate of Greece finally referred to the election of the new Metropolitans and the two auxiliary Bishops this coming Friday.

He also noted that “the Hierarchy will meet extraordinarily on Saturday, October 12, in a single session on a single subject, in order – and according to what the Holy Synod of August 28 has decided – my humility to provide you with “information on the Autocephaly of the Church of Ukraine.”

Also, today, on the first day of the Hierarchy meeting,

  1. the Activity Reports of the Synodical Committees for the Church Year 2018-2019 were presented by their Presidents, followed by a discussion on how they can be used;
  2. the Twelve Synodical Committees for the years 2020-2023 have been set up; and
  3. the List of Candidates for the Hierarchy has been completed.

The Holy Synod of the Hierarchy will continue its work on Wednesday, October 9.
