The Greek community of Australia sympathises with the people of Lebanon, Archbishop Makarios of Australia pointed out in his message about the tragedy in Beirut.
He highlighted in his message:
“I was saddened to learn of the untold tragedy that took place in the Lebanese capital, Beirut. The images we saw through the media, as well as the news of the loss of dozens of human lives, have deeply shocked all of us; myself, the bishops, the clergy and the entire staff of our Holy Archdiocese.
In the shocking moments that the people of Lebanon are experiencing now, I would like to point out that the Greek community of Australia sympathises with them and prays fervently to God for the speedy healing of the wounds caused by the tragedy and for the prevention of any further danger in the country.
Our thoughts are with their relatives, friends, those who are being treated in hospital and, their families which are suffering. We pray for them, for the souls of the departed, that they might rest in peace, and for the speedy recovery of the wounded.
I would also like to express sympathy and support of our Church to the Patriarchate of Antioch, and, in particular, to Patriarch John and to all our brothers and sisters who are now being tested.
Finally, I would also like to express our sincere condolences to our fellow citizens, members of the Lebanese Parish of Australia, who are watching what is happening in their homeland with a bleeding heart. I assure them that in these difficult times the Greek Parish participates wholeheartedly in their deep mourning.”
