US to donate 2.9 mln dollars for refugee unaccompanied minors

The US government’s financial assistance to improve the living conditions of refugee unaccompanied minors and to support the islands against the Covid-19 pandemic is estimated at 2.9 million dollars, Alternate Minister for Migration and Asylum Policy Giorgos Koumoutsakos said on Thursday, after his meeting with the US Ambassador to Greece, Geoffrey Pyatt.

The meeting was also attended by the UN High Commission for Refugees in Greece (UNHCR) representative in Greece, Philip Leclerc, and the head of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) mission in Greece, Gianluca Rocco.

Koumoutsakos said that the contribution would be used in cooperation with the UNHCR and the IOM.

On his part, Pyatt noted that the United States, like Greece’s partners in the EU, recognises that Greece bears a burden on behalf of the broader international community and “deserves all the support we can provide.”
