There will be no prayer ceremony at Sumela Monastery this year (upd)

LAST UPDATE

This year’s traditional prayer ceremony will not be held at Sumela Monastery in Trebizond, as the reconstruction work of the monastery was not completed.

According to the latest information from skai.gr, the temple is not ready to operate despite the intensive restoration work, so authorities have decided not to open the temple.

According to the timetable, work on the entrance rock and the support of the northern side of the monastery would be completed in June 2019.

Thus, the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew will not travel to Trebizond.

In its announcement, the Ecumencial Patriarchate confirmed this information. “The Ecumenical Patriarch and the Mother Church hope that the ongoing restoration work will be soon completed successfully and the Divine Liturgy will be celebrated again in this masterpiece for our nation,” the Ecumenical Patriarch said.
