A visit to the Ecumenical Patriarchate’s seat was held on Monday, April 25, by the main opposition leader and President of New Democracy, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, in order to attend the Holy Passion service of the reading of the Twelve Gospels at the St. George’s Cathedral.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis accompanied by the Consul General of Greece in Constantinople, Georgia Soultanopoulou, as well as his associates, visited the St. George’s Cathedral. Subsequently he was welcomed by the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. During their private meeting, they discussed current issues.

The Ecumenical Patriarch thanked the President of New Democracy for his continued interest in the issues of the Ecumenical Throne, the Greek diaspora in Constantinople, Imbros and Tenedos, and the Orthodox faithful in Turkey. “I am particularly pleased to welcome you in the Phanar today, on Holy Thursday just before the Resurrection,” said Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew to Kyriakos Mitsotakis

Kyriakos Mitsotakis, referring to his last visit to the birthplace of the Patriarch, Imbros, said that it was a special moment for him and that he had the best memories. “Your All Holiness, I wanted to have the chance to meet you on Holy Thursday, a very important day for the Orthodoxy, in order to express once again our deep love and respect to you,” said the president of New Democracy.
