In an announcement, the Patriarchate of Georgia expressed great discontent for the decision of Georgia’s general prosecutor not to disclose details from the case of Deacon Giorgi Mamaladze.
It is recalled that Deacon Giorgi Mamaladze was sentenced to nine years in September 2017 by the Tbilisi Court for an attempted assassination of Patriarch Ilia II of Georgia with cyanide and illegal possession of arms.
Specifically, the Patriarchate of Georgia asked the competent authorities to disclose details from the investigation in order to avoid misinterpretations regarding the case of Patriarch Ilia.
The Patriarchate also said: “Lawyers’ actions do not actually defend the interests of the convicted person, but the sole purpose is to harm the Church.”
“In fact, it is widely known that the Patriarchate will pull out of the case only if the convicted asks for forgiveness and recognizes his share of responsibility,” the Georgian Patriarch said.
The Patriarchate urged the convicted to release seized documents so that people know the charges against him.
