The Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus met under the chairmanship of Archbishop Chrysostom of Cyprus.

On the occasion of the sad anniversary of the Fall of Constantinople, the Holy Synod paid tribute to the Emperor Constantine Palaiologos and to those who fell during the defense of the city and wished the Lord of life and death to rest their souls.

As it is characteristically pointed out, “if Constantine Palaiologos had not fallen fighting heroically, if he had left, or had surrendered himself to the Turks, if the Church had not united the Nation, nor had undretaken Education and if it had not maintained its language and traditions, neither the Revolution of 1821, nor the regeneration (Palingenesis) would have been possible.

Honoring the memory of the champions of Constantinople, the Holy Synod invites everyone to be led by the example of their heroism and to draw the appropriate lessons from our history to deal with today’s difficult circumstances.”

The Holy Synod also decided for this year, because of the wedding postponements due to the coronavirus pandemic, to allow weddings to take place during the period of the Christmas fast too, until December 12, except Wednesdays and Fridays.
