Russian Foreign Ministry: The Chora Church is one of the most important UNESCO monuments

Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) spokesperson Maria Zakharova

The Chora Church in Constantinople is one of the most important UNESCO World Heritage Sites, said Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova, commenting on the conversion of Chora Church from a museum into a mosque.

The museum is a masterpiece of late Byzantine architecture, a former Church of the Holy Saviour built in the 11th century on the site of an older church in the Chora Church, she noted.

She said that it had been open as a museum for visitors since 1948, and that this attraction was one of the most important UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The mosaics and frescoes have been preserved almost completely in every part of the building, making it an excellent example of world and Christian culture, she said.
