The Roman Catholic Archbishop of Paris, Michel Aupetit, confirmed today that work to rebuild the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, which was partially destroyed by fire in 2019, could begin “in January 2021” as soon as the stabilization phase has been completed.
“The stabilization process will soon be completed. We can start work in January 2021,” he told reporters at the inauguration of an exhibition of children’s drawings depicting the cathedral, which had been placed on the fence of the site, in the presence of Jean-Louis Georgelin, chief of reconstruction operations of Notre Dame Cathedral.
The site has known some ups and downs. It was delayed last summer due to measures to be taken due to lead contamination. Then in the fall and winter, bad weather blocked the work. In the spring, the coronavirus hindered any activity on the site and only recently the work resumed, especially in the last phase of the difficult dismantling operation of the scaffolding of the Notre-Dame spire that began last week.
President Emanuel Macron’s ambition is to revive the cathedral by 2024.
