“The way of transmission of the virus is specific and this does not change scientifically for the Holy Communion either,” said the Professor of Clinical Virology, Georgios Sourvinos, speaking on ANT1 TV station.

Asked to comment on the issue of the Holy Communion, Sourvinos stressed, “The scientific data remain the same. Coronavirus is transmitted through the droplets and this is something that does not change.” He clarified to Nikos Hatzinikolaou that “this is the scientific opinion all over the world.”

Referring to the opening of the churches for the faithful in Greece in the coming days, the professor of Virology noted, “I am sure that everyone will comply with the rules so that there are no new outbreaks of the virus, which may be caused by mass gathering at worship places.”

Commenting on the Church’s stance on the pandemic, Sourvinos noted that “the Church has done its utmost to limit the coronavirus spread in the community” and concluded by saying that “the restrictive measures taken were highly effective.”
