Pope Francis celebrated Palm Sunday mass today at Saint Peter’s Basilica without the faithful. He urged people not to worry about the current situation of the new coronavirus pandemic and to try to ease the pain of others instead.

The Palm Sunday mass, which is usually attended by tens of thousands of people in St. Peter’s Square, was attended this time by approximately 20 people, including some priests, nuns and a choir, all of whom respected the measure of social distancing. The traditional procession with palms was conducted for symbolic reasons and covered a distance of only a few meters. Millions of people watched the ceremony either live on television or online.

In his homily, Pope Francis urged believers to ask God for help “in the tragedy of a pandemic, in the face of the many false securities that have now crumbled, in the face of so many hopes betrayed, in the sense of abandonment that weighs upon our hearts.”
