The coronavirus pandemic also reached Imbros and Tenedos, the two islands in the northern Aegean with Greek Orthodox communities. The local Church, in collaboration with the students of the Greek high school and junior high school, which is located in the hill village of Agridia in Imbros, supports the vulnerable groups, especially the elderly, who are also members of the Greek Orthodox community.
As people over the age of 65 are banned from traveling in Turkey as part of preventive measures, the elderly residents face great difficulties in buying food.
A few days after his arrival in Imbros, on March 25, the newly elected Metropolitan of Imbros and Tenedos, Kirillos, sent food packages to each of the elderly Greeks on both islands. The Orthodox Christian parishes of the villages of the two islands as well as the students of the Greek schools of Imbros contributed to this effort by receiving and distributing the packages to the elderly. It is noted that the Turkish governor also sent food packages to the elderly Greeks of Imbros as well as to all the elderly residents of the island.
At the initiative of the new Metropolitan, the Metropolis of Imbros and Tenedos donated 10,000 Turkish liras to the social grocery store of Imbros for the food needs of the local population regardless of their religion. The Metropolis of Imbros also donated 5,000 Turkish liras to the Tenedos Social Grocery Store and 5,000 Turkish liras were sent to the Directorate General of Foundations in Constantinople. Other Greek Orthodox communities in Turkey also sent money to the General Directorate of Foundations.
