The President of the Hellenic Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, contacted Archbishop Elpidophoros of America on Tuesday night. The Greek president praised the initiative of the Archbishop of America to participate in the peaceful protest march that took place last Wednesday in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, alongside the Borough President of Brooklyn, Eric Leroy Adams, and New York State Senator from the 22nd district, Andrew Gounardes.

The march took place over the killing of Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old emergency medical technician, who was killed when the police raided her apartment in Louisville, KY in March, and the killing of George Floyd, a 46-year-old African American, who was murdered by white police officers on May 25 in Minneapolis, MN.

The President of the Hellenic Republic referred to the significance of the Archbishop’s contribution to the protection of human rights and to the condemnation of racism and discrimination.

In a post on Twitter, referring to her contact with the Archbishop of America, Katerina Sakellaropoulou stressed the responsible attitude of the Orthodox Church in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.
