Greek President met Patriarch of Alexandria – Hagia Sophia in the focus of debate

The President of the Hellenic Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, held a meeting today with Patriarch Theodore of Alexandria and All Africa. The Patriarch informed the president about the important missionary, educational, social and charitable work carried out by the Patriarchate of Alexandria as well as about the intense problems faced by the African countries. The president of the Hellenic Republic congratulated the Patriarch on his contribution to his flock under adverse conditions and stressed the need for Europe to support Africa in dealing with the immigration pressure.

The president of the Hellenic Republic and the Patriarch of Alexandria also discussed the deteriorating situation in Libya as well as the recent provocative action by Turkey to convert Hagia Sophia into a mosque. They also stressed the need to support the Ecumenical Patriarchate in this difficult time.

The Patriarch thanked the president for the warm welcome and invited her to visit Egypt and the Patriarchate of Alexandria as soon as conditions allow.
