Eleni Giamarellou, an infectious disease specialist, speaking on SKAI television, expressed her belief that coronavirus cannot be transmitted by the Eucharist. She added that she will also receive it next Sunday without any fear at all.
“Whoever goes to receive the Holy Communion, whether he believes it or not, participates in the mystery. Therefore, there is no risk for coronavirus as for any other germ. Did you know that when we had the lepers in Greece, the priests distributed the Holy Communion to the lepers first and then to other people and no one ever was afflicted?”
She reiterated that she believed that the faithful who receives the Holy Communion could not get coronavirus, but “that does not mean that if the following day he goes somewhere else, he may not get afflicted and may not blame the mystery afterwards.”
“It is something that goes beyond our minds and our views and our thoughts,” she added, and when asked by reporters if this was beyond our health too, the professor replied, “Of course it is beyond our health too. It protects your health too, unquestionably.”
Regarding the objections of scientists in this regard, Ms. Giamarellou said that since this is a mystery, “the concept of science does not apply here.”
“The concept of science does not apply here. This is a concept of mystery, which is above science and affects science. Therefore, you either believe that you are participating in the greatest mystery and you do not get anything, or, if you are afraid, you do not go to receive the Holy Communion,” Ms. Giamarellou said.
