Greece will step up its campaign for the return of the Parthenon Sculptures from Britain and expects to gain more support from its European partners as the British influence weakens due to Brexit, Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni said in a Reuters interview today.
“It’s the mentality that has changed, the fact that Britain has distanced itself from the European family, and it’s been 200 years since the Greek revolution. I believe that the conditions are ripe for their permanent return,” the Greek minister said.
The Minister of Culture added that Greece would never abandon the campaign for the return of the Parthenon sculptures, accusing Lord Elgin of being nothing more than a thief.
“Motivated by financial gain, publicity and self-promotion, Elgin took illegal and improper measures to extract from Greece the Parthenon Sculptures and a plethora of other antiquities in a blatant act of serial theft.”
