EU: Turkey’s behavior is a source of concern throughout Europe

Asked about the clear solidarity of the EU in Greece and Cyprus, the EU lead spokesperson for foreign affairs and security policy stressed that the EU Foreign Ministers called on Turkey to stop the unilateral actions that lead to escalation.

In particular, Peter Stano pointed out that “EU Foreign Ministers are very clear and determined to show EU solidarity with the two affected Member States, Cyprus and Greece, and were very clear in their appeal to the Turkish authorities to put an end to unilateral actions escalating tensions in the Mediterranean.”

The EU expects from Turkey a peaceful solution to the tension in the eastern Mediterranean, EU spokesperson for Foreign Issues Peter Stano said at a press conference underlining that Turkey’s actions worry the entire EU.

Additionally, Stano underlined that High Representative Josep Borrell spoke on the phone with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, while mentioning two older phone conversations between the two men.

“The main reason of the phone call was to brief him on the result and the discussions of the EU Foreign Ministers on the EU-Turkey relations and on the conditions in the eastern Mediterranean,” stressed Peter Stano and added that ” the Turkish side was briefed publicly and through the message of Gymnich and afterwards by the High Representative himself on the EU’s expectations from Turkey for a peaceful solution to the tension in the eastern Mediterranean. He was also briefed on how the EU sees the way to de-escalation as well as the measures it is ready to take, and is already taking, against Turkey’s behaviour which, as the ministers have clearly stated, is a source of concern for the entire EU.”
