Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has officially presented the island of Plati (alt. Plateia), one of the Princes’ Islands, as the “Island of Democracy and Freedom”, thus celebrating the 60th anniversary of the coup in Turkey, as the news agency Anadolu reported.

“Yassıada (Turkish name), which hosts one of the darkest periods in the history of democracy, is being reborn as an island of democracy and freedom,” Turkey’s Communications Directorate announced in a statement, according to Anadolu.

The island is located in the Sea of Marmara southeast of Constantinople. Plati became notorious after the military coup on May 27, 1960, to imprison and prosecute Turkey’s first democratically elected prime minister, Adnan Menderes.

Menderes was imprisoned on the island and then was hanged along with two ministers on Kalolimnos (İmralı), Nicomedia, another island in the Sea of Marmara, in 1961.
