Ecumenical Patriarch: I am saddened by the silence in the Theological School of Halki

Speaking to an old classmate, Archimandrite Ioakeim of the Skete of Prophet Ilias at Mount Athos, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew recalled old memories from the time when the Theological School of Halki was open, but now every time he visits the place there is a profound silence.

The Ecumenical Patriarch said, “I often go to the Theological School of Halki, where I am able to meditate, rest, and work without any disturbance. Every time I walk through the classrooms, the corridors, the gardens, and the library I recall all the old memories. I am deeply saddened.”

He added, “I was a student back then and I remember that the School was full of life. I remember the four years when I served as assistant of our Scholarch. I spent eleven years there and that is why it is impossible to forget that place. I will go to great efforts so as the School to be reopened. I will be a great day.”

The Ecumenical Patriarch also said that, even though the School has remained closed for forty years, we should not lose hope.”
