Council of State rejected request for ‘freezing’ ban on church services

The Council of State rejected the requests made by citizens and associations for reasons of public health protection, who requested that an order should be issued which sets aside the ministerial decision so that the churches could open nationwide for the faithful and they could attend the liturgy.

In particular, the applicants sought to ‘freeze’ the joint ministerial decision by virtue of which all religious services in churches and other worship places were temporarily banned.

The applicants argue that the contested ministerial decision is unconstitutional and illegal and, in particular, point out that the measure of temporary ban of all kinds of church services is manifestly contrary to Articles 3, 13 and 25 of the Greek Constitution.
