Τhe Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus calls for a convocation of a Pan-Orthodox Counsil or a Congregation of the Primates, in case the objective of unity of the Church in Ukraine won’t be achieved.

The Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus met today on the issue of the Ecumenical Patriarchate granting autocephaly to the Church of Ukraine.

As it points out, the announcement that the Ecumenical Patriarchate grants autocephaly to the Church of Ukraine, was aiming at peace and at achieving unity for the Church there.

“We do not question this goal,” it emphasizes.

However, as it points out, this goal has not been achieved yet. The Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus recognizes that it is natural to allow a reasonable amount of time for the result to be seen.

Otherwise, if this goal is not achieved, “we are expecting by the Ecumenical Patriarch to either convene a Pan-Orthodox Synod or a congregation of the Primates to act upon it, by using the role conferred to him as the Primate of Orthodoxy.”

The main concern of all should be, as stressed in the announcement, the salvation of the people there.

The Church of Cyprus adds to its announcement that even if unity around the new leadership of the Church of Ukraine is achieved, the Ecumenical Patriarchate must still find a way to reassure “the conscience of the believers about the validity of this ordination and the ceremonies performed by this leadership.”

It also asks the Ecumenical Patriarchate to ensure a relative jurisdiction of the Russian people “in the place where its ancestors were baptized.”
