Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens and all Greece arrived in Evros to stand by the forces of deterrence of Turkey’s migratory pressures on the Greek-Turkish border.
The Archbishop began his visit from Petalo in Evros Delta, where he met military, police and firefighters, and commented on the situation, conveying his wishes to those guarding the Greek borders.
Addressing Alexandroupolis XIII Infantry division Commander Angelos Choudeloudis Archbishop Ieronymos said, “I am moved and proud. I feel sorry for these people who are pushed here because they become tools in the hands of others. We who are at the European borders must be demanding, saying that Europe cannot close its eyes to such phenomena. Our people love you (editor’s note: the uniformed services) very much and feel proud these days, even watching these tragic scenes, which are circulating in order to create impressions many times. We felt that something great was happening in this area and our army was the one to take the lead, and we were boasting and praying.”
The Archbishop offered one copy of the New Testament to the security staff and hoped “that what European leaders announced from Kastanies yesterday were implemented and that we would all be peaceful and beautiful again.”
Among other things, Archbishop Ieronymos welcomed the European Union’s aid commitment to Greece, but noted that they will be efficient “providing they honor them.”
Metropolitans Panteleimon of Xanthi, Anthimos of Alexandroupolis, Panteleimon of Maroneia and Komotini, as well as local officials, welcomed the Archbishop to Evros.
