Archbishop Makarios visits Oakleigh Grammar

Archbishop Makarios of Australia

Archbishop Makarios of Australia visited Australia’s largest Greek day school, and more specifically the school of the Community of Sts Anargiri, in the suburb of Oakleigh, in Melbourne.

About 1,000 children attend this school from kindergarten to the last grade of high school.

Although 80% of the students are of Greek descent, at Oakleigh Grammar, children from 50 different ethnic backgrounds attend, and they all gave a warm welcome to the Australian Archbishop.

The official welcoming ceremony was held at the school’s gymnasium.

Mark Robertson, the headmaster of the school, spoke very warmly about the Greek origins and the Greek-Orthodox directions that the school still offers today.

The Archbishop called the pupils his friends, and, in closing his brief greeting, he focused on the words of faith and wisdom of the school escutcheon, explaining their special importance in the times we are going through.
