Archbishop Chrysostomos: We haven’t found a solution for 45 years, are we going to find it now?

Archbishop Chrysostomos of Cyprus

Archbishop Chrysostomos of Cyprus called on UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to be rigorous and inspired by the principles of justice.

Archbishop Chrysostomos, after the Divine Liturgy at the Panagia Chrysorrogiatissa Monastery where he presided, said in his remarks, “I believe that we want different things from the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mustafa Akinci, who may not mention it but it is crystal clear than he is under pressure by Ankara.”

He wondered whether the UN Secretary-General would be able to do a good job in arbitration.

He also expressed his doubts, saying that “we should find a solution on our own since we know in advance that Turkey wants everything. If possible Turkey wants all of Cyprus.” He estimated that we cannot hold talks and find a solution. ” We haven’t found a solution for 45 years. Are we going to find it now?” he wondered.

“We would like a rigorous UN Secretary-General to come and say ‘Let’s make a proper state that can work. Because if it doesn’t work it will collapse and if it does, everything will fall appart,” he added.

He also wished that Antonio Guterres “will order ‘I, the UN Secretary General, stand for these and these must be done’. If he did so, we should congratulate him,” he added.
