Cleaning works of the forest road network, of two hundred and twenty kilometers length, cleaning of the streams, repairs in ports and networks of water supply, sewerage and fire protection as well as works in the monasteries and constructions of two roads are carried out on Mount Athos, where a state of emergency has been declared, due to the bad weather in early April.

The above was stated by the Governor of Central Macedonia, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, who today had a meeting on the issue with the Civil Governor of Mount Athos, Athanasios Martinos, the head of the forestry office of Mount Athos, and representatives of the technical services of Mount Athos, the Civil Protection and the Fire Department. “The major disasters since the April natural disaster, especially on the road network, are directly affecting the operation of Mount Athos as a whole.”

“Mount Athos, apart from a cultural and religious heritage, is the flagship of religious tourism in the country,” he said. On the occasion of the assumption of the duties of Mr. Martinos, he noted that “a personality of international scope and with indisputable abilities takes over the administration of Mount Athos”.

Referring to the bad weather of last April and the damage it caused, the Mount Athos Civil Governor said: “We are facing a huge increase in natural disasters due to climate change now. The moral responsibility we all have for Mount Athos is enormous.” Mr. Martinos thanked the Governor for “his immediate response to the declaration of an emergency” and stressed that the restorations are progressing rapidly.
