Vatican: Putin is a “religious man who embraces Christian values”

The Vatican believes that Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is visiting Italy and the Vatican where he will hold a meeting with Pope Francis, is a “religious man who embraces Christian values.”

Cardinal Secretary of State, Pietro Parolin, expressed this opinion in view of the visit of the Russian president, according to the Vatican News website.

The cardinal points out, “Russia is paying these issues great attention, such as the protection of Christians in the Middle East and the crisis of Christian values in western world.”

The Russian president is expected today at the Vatican by Pope Francis. That will be the third meeting of Putin and Pope Francis.

Vladimir Putin and Pope Francis are going to discuss mainly “the protection of the Christian holy places in Syria,” Putin’s foreign affairs adviser, Yuri Ushakov, said.
