US House of Representatives recognised Armenian genocide

The United States House of Representatives approved by a vast majority the US resolution which recognises the Armenian genocide of a century ago as a symbolic but historic move that will certainly whip up new tensions with Turkey.

The House, which is controlled by the Democrats, approved the resolution by 405 votes, with 11 against. The resolution mentions that the House officially recognises the killing of 1.5 million Armenians by the Ottoman Empire in 1915-1923 as a genocide.

Turkey’s diplomacy reacted strongly to the US House of Representatives decisions.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu has strongly criticised the US House of Representatives’ decision made on Tuesday to adopt by an overwhelming majority a resolution recognising mass killing of Armenians more than a century ago as “genocide”. The Turkish minister of Foreign Affairs described the decision as “null and void”.

The resolution recognising the mass killings of Armenians as genocide was adopted with 405 votes, with 11 against. It is a symbolic but historic decision that will certainly heighten tensions between Washington and Ankara.
