Ankara came under international fire for the conversion of the Chora Church into a mosque, and therefore the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, according to its regular tactics, reacted with an indictment on Greece.

The Spokesperson of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hami Aksoy, does not fail to accuse Greece once more of converting mosques within its territories, while as he characteristically states, “Greece is the last country that can talk to Turkey about its religious rights.”

Aksoy also stressed that “changing the status of a World Heritage Site is not contrary to the UNESCO Convention.

“Having converted Islamic shrines and mosques that were part of the Ottoman cultural tradition in its territories, Greece is the last country that can talk to Turkey about its religious rights.

In addition, it is arrogant on the part of Greece to try to teach us lessons while restricting the human rights and freedoms of the Turkish minority with oppressive practices contrary to international agreements.”

He also states in his announcement that “We call once again on Greece to reconcile with history and to provide the necessary provisions for the Muslim minority to practice its worship.”
