Turkish people are indifferent to Hagia Sophia

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan

Popular resentment against the Turkish president is strong, despite his desperate efforts to increase his popularity at the level of communication, according to a new poll.

According to a poll by the Eurasia Public Opinion Research Center published on Saturday in the Cumhuriyet newspaper, 48.6% of citizens do not intend to vote for Erdogan again if he seeks re-election in the presidential elections to be celebrated in 2023 on the centennial anniversary of the Republic of Turkey.

The percentage who will vote for Erdogan again is only 38.9% and is even slightly worse than the one he received in the previous poll (just over 39%).

Particularly striking is the fact that, according to Ahval, 99.7% of the population – indeed virtually all of them – say that their vote will not be affected by the conversion of Hagia Sophia into a mosque.

When asked about Erdogan’s overall performance as president, 40.2% described it as a failure, while 28.9% described it as successful. 30.9% of the respondents described it as neither successful nor unsuccessful.

Nevertheless, Erdogan’s party, the AKP, remains first in the intention to vote, and in fact by a large margin compared to the Kemalists. The Justice and Development Party (AKP) has 35% of the vote, while the Kemalists have just reached 28.4%.
