Metropolitan Demetrios of Gjirokastra has become the target of the Albanian Press.

In particular, the correspondent of the Tirana newspaper “Telegraf,” published an article on Sunday of the Veneration of the Holy Cross, when the Metropolitan of Gjirokastra was officiating in the church of Saint Charalambos.

In the article published by the newspaper, it is reported that the Metropolitan of Gjirokastra appealed to Christians against Muslims.

It actually indicates that Demetrios was “incited” to do so. The author of the article urges the Albanian justice to move against him.

According to Romfea.gr, believers who were present during the mass, firmly refute any such reference by Demetrios.

They even characterise the Metropolitan of Gjirokastra as a personality with expanded horizons, education and culture.

To show their support to Demetrios, believers from the Orthodox community in Saranda drew up a text by which they “respond” to Telegraf’s article. They underline that “what we feel confident about is that anything they are trying to blame in the Church and in our community is diametrically opposed to what we have been taught and learned, we submit and attest daily and we will continue to do so: accept attacks with patience, persist in truth and conduct with justice.

The progress of our parish and its radiation throughout the wider social environment, away from mentalities that support division because of origin and language, seem to have annoyed those who do not want it.”

And they add: “We have learned to pray both for those who love us and for those who hate us. Especially during the sacred period of the Great Lent we will continue to do that with greater dedication.”
