The icon of the Theotokos which used to disappear from a monastery with locked doors

This icon was found from a long time ago in the katholikon of the Holy Monastery of Vatopedi in the column of the left side. In 1730, however, it suddenly disappeared from its place, while the gates of the temple were locked, and was found in the Xenophontos Monastery. Everyone thought that someone had stolen it and so the icon was transferred back to its place, while the Vatopedi fathers took very strict security measures and sealed the temple. In a short time, however, when the church was opened for the service, the icon was again missing from its place and very soon news arrived from the Xenophontos Monastery that it was found again in the corresponding place of the katholikon there.

The people of Vatopedi were convinced of the miracle and decided not to resist the will of the Mother of God anymore. They ran to the Xenophontos Monastery to worship the Hodegetria and for a long time they sent her oil and candle to her new home.
