Sunday of Orthodoxy

The first Sunday of Great Lent, that is Sunday of Orthodoxy, gives prominence to the triumph of the Orthodox Church over false teachings.

The Church was literally shaken by the Iconoclasm (Eikonomachia) for a century. One of the Great Fathers and Teachers of the Orthodox Church, who became a martyr, just like Saint Theophylact, was Saint John of Damascus. He reformulated and interpreted the teachings of Saint Basil the Great in 8 AD.

According to theological teachings, venerating icons does not mean venerating material and images, but the iconic representation. The Second Ecumenical Council in Nicea convened in 787 AD to settle the icon dispute. People are allowed to worship only the Trinity, that is the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. We represent Jesus Christ on icons because He took on human nature and became human. We also depict the Saints to honour Jesus Christ, the Gracious Despot.
