Pope appoints woman to senior Vatican diplomatic post

Pope Francis

Pope Francis appointed today the first woman to hold a high-ranking post in the Secretariat of State, the male-dominated Vatican’s diplomatic and administrative nerve center.

The 66-year-old Italian Francesca di Giovanni will take the reins of a newly created post in a department known as the Section for Relations with States, in which she will essentially have the status of under-secretary.

The Roman Catholic Church only allows men to be ordained priests, and the roles traditionally assigned to women are in the shadow of the Vatican government.
