Following the celebration of the Divine Liturgy at the Cathedral of St. Nicholas, in Hamzaoui, Patriarch Theodoros of Alexandria bestowed the offikion upon the consul general of Greece in Cairo, G. Daskalopoulos, the chargée d’affaires of the embassy, E. Kyriakopoulou, and the defence attaché, P. Kanoutos.
Patriarch Theodoros of Alexandria said that the day was dedicated to the honorees who leave Cairo and expressed his love and appreciation for them. The consul general, G. Daskalopoulos, spoke about the warm welcome he received every time he returned to Cairo after his arduous travels to Africa. He made special reference to Ms Kyriakopoulou and spoke of her abilities as a diplomat as well as of her kindness. In addition, the defence attaché, P. Kanoutos, who had his birthday today, said that he and the Greek Armed Forces were on the side of the Patriarchate of Alexandria.
However, he expressed his regret for the fact that, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the pews were empty and members of the Greek community of Cairo could not attend the Divine Liturgy. He also said that the coronavirus was a sign from God so as “to understand how precious life is, how easily it can be lost or gained, and how precious it is.”
“We are soldiers,” said Patriarch Theodore, referring to the role of the priests of the Patriarchate of Alexandria. “We have been guarding the past day and night. We will remain on the ramparts and Thermopylae will be waiting for us,” he concluded.
