National day of mourning in Albania

Today, the day after the powerful earthquake that claimed the lives of at least 24 people, as rescue workers redouble their efforts to recover survivors from the collapsed buildings, was declared a national day of mourning in Albania.

The 6.4 magnitude earthquake, the strongest that has hit this Balkan country for many decades, caused buildings to collapse that trapped people under debris.

“We lost many lives, but we also saved many,” Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama told reporters during a visit to a Tirana hospital last night to see the injured. “Unfortunately, the loss report is not the definitive one,” he warned, before declaring Wednesday a “day of national mourning”.

Military, police and Civil Protection officials continued their day-to-day investigations into the wreckage of towns near the epicenter of the devastating earthquake close to the Albanian Adriatic coast.
