Moscow Patriarchate: The division among the Ukrainian Orthodox people is amplified

The situation in Ukraine was examined by the Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Moscow, which met yesterday under the supervision of Patriarch Kirill.

According to its communiqué, the Holy Synod referred to the continued pressure against the Church of Ukraine of the Patriarchate of Moscow exerted by the government of the country.

“The Holy Synod of the Orthodox Church of Russia expresses its deep concern at the deterioration of the situation of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine. The granting of the Tomos of Autocephaly by the Patriarchate of Constantinople to the schismatic Church of Ukraine further intensified the division among the Orthodox people of Ukraine, while it exacerbated significantly interfaith relations,” the Holy Synod stated.

Furthermore, the Holy Synod of the Church of Russia, inter alia, stated: “Of particular concern is the interference of Ukrainian state authorities in the internal issues of the Church, as well as attempts to exploit the Church in the short term for the interests of the State. At the same time, the fundamental rights and freedom of the person guaranteed by the Constitution of Ukraine are being violated.”

At another point, the Church of Russia stressed: “It becomes increasingly clear that the aim of the current government’s representatives is to purge the Orthodox Church of Ukraine of the Patriarchate of Moscow. They have made recommendations to local authorities and law enforcement agencies to transfer the Communities of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Patriarchate of Moscow to the schismatics.”
