Monastery of Esphigmenou: We sympathize with the relatives of the victims in Sri Lanka

An announcement on the latest attacks on churches on Easter Day in Sri Lanka was issued by the Holy Monastery of Esphigmenou.

As noted, “people were celebrating the passion of Christ, according to the Western Church, but on the day of the Resurrection, the actions of some fundamentalists transformed it into a day of mourning.

Humanity counts many victims, which are added to the long list of those who were sacrificed on the altar of some people’s religious fanaticism, who turned religion into a war chariot, spreading death with great ease to those who do not agree with them.

We understand the problem, because we, as Monastery of Esphigmenou, experience the tragic effects of religious fanaticism too.

A fanaticism that prepares zealots rather than believers, who are ready to die or even to spread pain and death to those who oppose their ideology and beliefs by using religion as a coverup.

We express our warm condolences to the families of the victims and we wish speedy recovery to the injured.”
