Minister of Education: Clergy remain in public payroll

Minister of Education and Religious Affairs Niki Kerameus

The Minister of Education, Niki Kerameus, spoke on the subject of the clerical salary during a TV show.

The Minister of Education referred to the previous government’s proposal on Church-State relations and added that the clergy will remain in public payroll.

“The previous government’s proposal, which was not even an agreement, collapsed. We disagree. Clergy remain in public payroll,” the Minister of Education said.

“Any issues concerning Church-State relations may well be solved by law. We are not the type of government that gives pre-election promises, which will not keep. We continue, in the post-election period, to clearly say on this issue exactly what we were saying during the pre-election phase, which is that there is no justification for changing the clergy regime at this time, there is no justification for change,” Niki Kerameus underlined.
