Metropolitan of Nigeria to Metropolitan of Limassol: Diptychs are not to be negotiated

The statements made by Metropolitan Athanasios of Limassol concerning the commemoration of the new Metropolitan of Kyiv by Patriarch Theodore in Limassol last week provoked reactions within the Hierarchy of the Patriarchate of Alexandria.

The Patriarch of Alexandria “cannot adapt, let alone negotiate, the Diptychs of the Patriarchate of Alexandria according to the beliefs of the host”, emphasized in his statement Metropolitan Alexandros in direct response to the statement of the Metropolitan from the Church of Cyprus who said that there were pressures exerted on the Patriarch of Alexandria not to commemorate the Diptychs.

The Metropolitan of Nigeria even clarified to the Metropolitan of Limassol that “We do not offer the Holy Communion while questioning the right one. This is a timeless truth in the Church’s history that cannot even be implicitly questioned in any way.”
