Metropolitan of Nafpaktos: Conspiracy theories about closing churches during lockdown period are absurd

Metropolitan Ierotheos of Nafpaktos replied to the conspiracy theories about the closing of churches during the period of the lockdown.

“The prime minister, after consulting scientists and experts, did not decide to close schools, universities, shops, sports fields, cultural centres, hotels, airports, borders, and to ruin the country’s economy from one day to another in order to hit the Church and to forbid Christians from receiving Holy Communion. I think such thoughts are absurd,” said the Metropolitan of Nafpaktos, representing the Church of Greece in the media during the quarantine period.

In an interview he gave today to orthodoxia.info, Metropolitan Ierotheos stressed, “We were fearful of the spread of the virus and, therefore, we did not want to be held accountable for the death of the faithful due to overcrowding.”

He thus responded to several opinions heard within the Church: “We, who live within the church world, are aware of our theology that is inextricably linked to our history and not to an imaginary world. Theology is, in fact, the reality we live and it is based on facts. It is not a para-theology based on fantasies,” he concluded.
