Metropolitan of Corfu asked Hierarchy to postpone decision-making on Ukrainian autocephaly issue

In a letter to the Hierarchy of the Church of Greece, Metropolitan Nektarios of Corfu proposed postponing the decision-making on the recognition of the Autocephaly of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine by the Church of Greece.

The day before the extraordinary meeting of the Hierarchy of the Church of Greece on the Ukrainian autocephaly issue, Metropolitan Nektarios asked the Hierarchy that the Church of Greece should not be the first Church to recognize the Ukrainian autocephaly. He proposed that they should wait for the recognition by the Ancient Patriarchates and the Churches preceding the Church of Greece in the diptychs.

Metropolitan of Corfu believed that “It is still not the time for a decision on this thorny issue because the geopolitical conditions in the wider region are not normal,” arguing that “any decision is likely to cause difficulties in our homeland.”

He even proposed that the Church of Greece should take the role of mediator to establish a dialogue between the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the Orthodox Russian Church.
