Memory of Venerable Theodosius the Cenobiarch

By Bishop Grigorios of Mesaoria

The Orthodox Church commemorates today Venerable Theodosius, the Cenobiarch. He was born in Cappadocia of pious parents. He lived under Emperors Leo and Anastasius.

Venerable Theodosius became a monk and distinguished himself by his ascetic way of life, which he aligned with the will of God; he was abstinent, righteous, and modest. In addition, during that time, he met other well-known ascetics, such as Saint Simeon the Stylite, but then he decided to leave the place where he was preaching to other monks. Moreover, he performed many miracles by the power of the Holy Spirit. He fell asleep in the Lord in old age, in 529 AD.

Venerable Theodosius fought long and hard during his life; he was singing hymns, fasting, keeping vigil, and, therefore, he became a role model for his disciplines. The Feast of Venerable Theodosius the Cenobiarch reminds us that it is very important to remain steadfast in our faith and to fight against selfishness and self-love, which are weaknesses that lead to personal decay.
