Memory of Venerable Peter of Mount Athos

Venerable Peter of Mount Athos

The Church celebrates the memory of Venerable Peter of Mount Athos.

Venerable Peter came from Constantinople. His parents, who were pious and distinguished members of the community, had raised him according to Christ’s teaching.

Peter’s education was remarkable, and he was so gifted that he became a general. With the power of the Christian life, he remained on the bright path of the Holy Spirit. He ascended through the ranks, but remained humble. While he was among the powerful, he loved to keep company with the poor and to visit their humble homes, to bring comfort and relief to their sorrow.

However, the royal army was defeated and he was taken captive. He was miraculously released and decided to dedicate himself completely to Christ. He traveled to Rome, visited all the Christian shrines, studied the history of the Church’s struggles and then became a monk. He then went to Mount Athos, where he practiced by fasting and constantly praying. He practiced for several years in a cave. When he died, the monks buried him with due respect as their father and teacher in the spiritual path to attest perfection and sanctification.
