Memory of Venerable Gerasimus of Jordan

Our Church celebrates the memory of Venerable Gerasimus of Jordan, Saint Acacius, and Saint Gregory of Cyprus.

Venerable Gerasimus was born to pious parents in Lycia around the 7th century AD. He was tempted by the heresy of Monophysitism, which acknowledged only the divine nature in Jesus Christ, but not His human nature. Because he had a good conscience and humble disposition, during his visit to great hermits and scholars, he realized his aberration and repented and returned to the true faith and tradition of the Church.

The hermit Gerasimus of Jordan was distinguished for his strict spiritual ascesis. The Greek Orthodox monastery of Deir Hajla near Jericho commemorates St. Gerasimus, whose lavra was nearby.
