Memory of Saint Dometius of Persia

Our Church commemorates the holy martyrs Asterios the Miracle Worker and Dometius of Persia († 363), Virginmartyr Potamia of Alexandria, the Wonderworker, New Martyr Abbacum of Thessalonica († 1628) (feast transferred from August 6), St. of the Russian, Saint Sozon of Nicomedia, Hieromartyr Narcissus, Bishop of Jerusalem, Saint Mikallos of Akanthou in Cyprus.

Saint and martyr Dometius was of Persian descent and lived under the reign of Constantine the Great. He was taught the Holy Gospel by a Christian named Uaros. When the people of his house heard of it, they revolted against him, and Saint Dometius was forced to abandon them, desiring total devotion to Christ the Savior.

He fled to the city of Nisibis at the Byzantine border, where he lived in a monastery. However, he also departed from the monastery to come to the monastery of Sergius and Bacchus in Theodosioupolis, where he cultivated to a great extent the virtues and studied the spiritual content of the Holy Gospel.

Thanks to the morality, philanthropy, and spiritual superiority of Dometius, the head of the monastery wanted to have him made a presbyter.

Considering himself unworthy, Saint Dometius lived in a cave, instead of remaining in office.

Julian the Apostate ordered his stoning to death because they found him praying with his monk disciples.
