Our Church commemorates today martyrs Aquila and Priscilla, Venerable Eulogius of Alexandria, Patriarch of Alexandria, Saints Abraham, Martinian, and Symeon, the founders of the Hilandar Monastery.
Saints Aquila and Priscilla were a couple of Jews tentmakers living in Corinth. They were virtuous and pious. When Saint Paul the Apostle visited Corinth to preach the Holy Gospel, Saints Aquila and Priscilla offered him a place to stay as they were impressed with his preaching. They were so touched by his fiery speech that, after having been catechized and baptized by him, they decided to follow him on his missionary journeys as his assistants.
The Apostle Paul was so impressed by their virtues that he mentions them in his epistles, writing that not only he, but all the Churches of the Nations are grateful for what they offered.
Later the persecutors of Christianity arrested and beheaded them, thus receiving the crown of Apostles and Martyrs.
The couple Aquila and Priscilla teach us that everything in daily life, especially in the married life, is transformed and endowed by love, humility, resolve, diligence, faith and hope in the Holy Trinity.
