May 11, 330, the inauguration of Constantinople

Hagia Sophia

“During these days we have more celebrations. May 11 is the inauguration, the birthday of Constantinople. Our Constantinople, this big City, the historic, beautiful city of our fathers, has, like each of us, its birthday.

It was inaugurated by Constantine the Great in 330 AD. and continues to be one of the largest and most important cities in the world. It has a long and inexhaustible history, especially on the part of our own Nation, on the part of Christianity.

This City with the monuments, the memories, with so many great events of our Ecclesiastical history that took place here, celebrated its birthday yesterday and we are happy that God gave us the power to live and fulfill the Ecumenical mission of our Patriarchate from this City, in which the Patriarchate has been based since its foundation, for about 1,700 years.”
